We frequently come across the statement, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away;” however, this statement does not apply to the dentist.
As we know that some foods are good for our physical health, some are not. Similarly, some foods are good for our oral health, i.e., for our teeth and gums; however, some can deteriorate our oral health. Therefore, while you are up for choosing the food to eat, consider your oral health.
Fundamentally, to consume any foods or drinks, it is important to monitor their ingredients. One such ingredient to monitor is sugar. Several drinks, including carbonated sodas, fruit juices, and/or your daily cup of sugary chai all can cause tooth decay. Moreover, fruit juices can be dangerous for our health because we frequently intake fruit juices, thinking that they are good for us. Remember, a grape juice bottle of 350ml contains over 56 grams of sugar. Therefore, it is advisable to read labels and develop awareness related to the proportion of sugar contained in the foods you consume.
Several other sugary foods and drinks to watch out for are namely:
• Bottled teas- Contain over 50 grams of sugar.
• Milk- Contains over 12 grams of sugar in each serving.
• Bottled pasta sauce- Contains 12 grams of sugar.
• Breakfast cereals- Contents can be full of sugar.
And, yes, what about sweets like cakes, mithai, ice cream and more? They are full of sugar, aren’t they? However, the occasional treat won’t do much harm to our teeth, as long as it is followed with a thorough brushing to remove that lingering sugar.
Once any sugary item is consumed, the sugar in your mouth causes acid to attack the teeth for up to an hour, leading to tooth decay, which eventually emerges the need for fillings, root canal treatments, and extractions if the decay has progressed too far.
Henceforth, it is significant to watch the sugar content in the foods to eat. Also, once it is consumed, make sure to brush right away to protect your teeth from decay.
