Dental Care for special children

children-with-special-needs

The Academy Of Pediatric Dentistry defines special needs children as those with chronic physical, developmental, behavioral, or emotional conditions. They usually have limitations on daily activities and require more extensive, exclusive dental and medical services. We believe that every child is a blessing and needs to be handled with utmost care and precision but balancing the requirements of special needs children can be very challenging for the parents.

According to the Maternal and Child Health Bureau, those children are almost twice as likely to unmet dental problems compared to children without special needs. If you're a parent of a special needs child, you must pay particular attention to his/her dental care. Below are some tips on how to approach it.

1) Start your infant's home care routine as soon as possible by wiping his or her gums with a wet gauze pad.
2) Once teeth have erupted, brush them at least twice a day with a soft toothbrush and floss daily.
3) If your child can't rinse or gags easily, you can brush with a fluoride rinse, which can improve the child's defense against tooth decay. Only do this with older children.
4) Serving nutritious meals and restricting sugary or starchy foods can help baby teeth develop properly and limit exposure to decay that causes acid attacks.
5) Brush your child's teeth after eating or having him drink or rinse with water to neutralize the acids from those sugary foods.
6) Professionally applied fluoride gel or foam is beneficial for children who are unable to use home oral rinses or who are at high risk of dental caries.
7) Antimicrobial like chlorhexidine and xylitol are especially recommended for children with chronic diseases such as leukemia, kidney failure, immune deficiencies, or Downs Syndrome.
8) Dental sealants and oral prophylaxis will help to treat caries, calculus caused by mouth breathing, inadequate salivary flow, metabolic disorders, tube feedings, oral motor dysfunction, or inadequate oral hygiene.
